Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
